PROGRAM DESIGN:
The Bachelor of Social Science (Honours) programme in Journalism, Communication and Media Studies (JCMS) at the State University of Bangladesh has been designed for imparting comprehensive learning of the principles, dynamics and techniques of media, communication and journalism. Rigorous theoretical and hands-on practice in the fields of human communication, media and journalism will function as the basis of course operation. The students undergoing the aforesaid academic curriculum will be equipped with theories, practical know-hows and essential skills required for developing themselves as appropriate professionals in any branch of communication, media and journalism. The program opts to impart the learners most modern and inclusive education in the aforesaid fields with a view to preparing themselves as competent professionals to meet the demand of expanding national and international electronic and print media market as well as in the fields of development and corporate communication.
In short, it is all about empowering a person with the latest and finest set of social skills.
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME:
- To produce skilled professionals to manage the affairs of newspaper and media organizations.
- To manage the communication affairs of different national and international development organizations and corporate houses.
- To strengthen students’ theoretical and practical knowledge of Communication, Journalism and Media to enable them to act in real life with maturity and skills.
- To impart scientific knowledge for identification, selection and preparation of news, communication and other media contents.
- To encourage research in the fields of media, journalism, communication and development.
DURATION OF THE PROGRAM:
The duration of Bachelor of Social Science (Honours) in Journalism, Communication and Media Studies (JCMS) program is 12 semesters

Why JCMS?
Media is perceived as the mirror of the society, and Journalists essentially constitute the conscience of it. What a person do 24X7 is nothing but communication; people just communicate with other people, and even with himself/herself. So, it becomes obvious to know how to communicate, that is, to know how to do the thing you do all the time!
Almost everything is becoming more and more reliant on media exposure to survive in the highly competitive world. In such a context, knowing the grammar of the media and acquiring required skills to deal with that is a must, indeed!
About the Faculties
The core and full-time faculties of JCMS are trained at home and abroad and have comprehensive knowledge on the global media arena. Having long experience in the fields of communication, journalism, media, development, and having expertise with dependable set of skills, the faculties are the most-sought experts to conduct training, research and evaluation from all over the country. All the faculties have research publications and researches on relevant fields that are being studied at several public and private universities of home and abroad as part of the course curricula. All these make JCMS of SUB unique parting it from others.
JCMS also provides its students with relevant other experts i.e. Editors and other senior journalists from different media, Communication Experts of esteemed national and international organizations, Writers/Authors on different fields, Filmmakers, and Experts on state, politics & national security.
Media Center
JCMS has a full-fledged Media Center to provide technical supports for learning and practicing skills for Television and other forms of video (Documentary/Film) production & editing. It has the latest equipment where the students are the key work-force. The department already has its own online TV channel titled JCMS TV and a quarterly publication named Bijoy.
Program
Admission Process
The Department of Journalism, Communication and Media Studies operates a round the year admission system divided into three semesters i.e. spring(January – April), summer(May – August) and fall(September – December). The students are required to fulfill the university admission requirement in addition to the UGC guidelines. The admission forms and relevant information can be collected from the Admissions offices in the Bijoy Campus at Kalabagan and from the main campus at Dhanmondi as well. Completed applications along with required documents should be submitted to the admission office as per the submission deadline.
Admission Eligibility
- Minimum CGPA-2.50 both in SSC & HSC (Separately). If anyone gets less than 2.50 then s/he needs 6 points in total for admission.
- The department and the university authority will decide other special cases according to the UGC rules and regulations.
