B. Pharm – Bachelor of Pharmacy

Introduction

The Department of Pharmacy at SUB started its journey in 2004 with the vision to provide world class education, considering the need and demand of pharmacy professionals in home and abroad. The department has now more than 500 fulltime students in the four-year Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons.) program, and 300 students in the Master of Pharmacy program.

We have 20 exceptionally brilliant and highly experienced permanent faculty members and 30 qualified and technically sound adjunct faculties from University of Dhaka having extraordinary research experience and publications in top ranking national & international scientific journals. In addition, the department has 20 adjunct faculties from reputed pharmaceutical industries to provide unique teaching based on their practical experience in pharmaceutical formulation, quality control and pharmaceutical marketing & management.

The department is offering fully accredited (Pharmacy Council of Bangladesh) professional programs leading to the Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm.) and Master of Pharmacy (M. Pharm.).

The mission of the Department of Pharmacy is to produce top quality pharmacy graduates as well as advance the pharmaceutical science by performing the drug-related research & research-based teaching covering different areas, including:

Why Pharmacy?

Pharmacists are the key players in a wide array of health care settings. Today's pharmacists are playing a crucial role in preparing world class medicines & other health care products, patient medication management and its safety. The rapid expansion of pharmaceutical sciences, specially in pharmaceutical industries, hospitals, clinics and community pharmacy have created lot of opportunities for pharmacists, as mentioned in the career opportunities section.

Research Facilities

The department has 13 State-of-the-art Laboratories with animal house and research laboratories. The teachers and students of the department are actively involved in different areas of research such as analytical pharmacy, drug development, drug design, formulation development, in vitro bioequivalence study, rational use of drug, phytochemistry & drug screening and synthesis of medicinal & related substances, bioinformatics & computational chemistry, etc.

Seminar Library

Department of Pharmacy at SUB, has its own seminar library with adequate number books and journals which provides information to the students. One of its greatest priorities is to enhance the academic excellence of SUB students, to improve their research skills and to foster their information based critical thinking. These facilities are available in addition to the Central Library of the University. Both the seminar and central library remains open from 8 AM to 8 PM Saturday to Thursday.

Multimedia, Internet and Wi-Fi

All classrooms are equipped with multi-media facilities and internet access. The whole department is covered by Wi-Fi. CCTV network covers the entire campus all day.

Activities

·  The students of the Department of Pharmacy, State University of Bangladesh are engaged in different co-curricular activities, including sports, debates and cultural programs.

·     The students also take part in various social works, like helping flood victims, distributing winter cloths among the destitute, etc.

·     Furthermore, the Department of Pharmacy regularly organizes seminars and technical discussions on the different contemporary issues of Pharmacy. Renowned individuals from home and abroad are invited to deliver their speech and share their valuable experiences with our students.

·  Department of Pharmacy has been organizing Career Fair since 2014 to provide assistance in building the career of the graduates, where top-ranked pharmaceutical companies of the country regularly take part in the fair to recruit pharmacists.

ADMISSION ELIGIBILITY

Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons.)

       I.       Candidate must have a minimum aggregate GPA 8.00 in SSC or equivalent and HSC or equivalent examinations (in a total scale of 10) in the Science Group, but not less than GPA 3.50 (in a scale of 5) in either of them.

     II.         Candidate must pass the SSC or equivalent and HSC or equivalent examinations with a minimum GPA 4.00 (in a scale of 5) in Chemistry and Biology, and a minimum GPA 3.50 (in a scale of 5) in Physics and Mathematics.

   III.        In case of the “O” and “A” level examinations, candidates must pass the examinations with minimum ‘B’ grade in Chemistry and Biology, and minimum ‘C’ grade in Physics and Mathematics.

  IV.        The student must pass HSC/ “A” level or recognized equivalents with the following science subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics.

    V.         However, candidates having no Mathematics at the HSC/ “A” level or recognized equivalents may be admitted, but they need to take an extra 3 (three) credits course on Mathematics relevant to B. Pharm. curriculum.

  VI.        Candidates must have passed the HSC or equivalent examination within two years before of their admission to the B. Pharm. (Hons.) program.

  VII.         Foreign students must have passed 12 education years and got same grades in equivalent examinations from foreign recognized institutions.

Curriculum


The entire bachelor program is covered through a set of theoretical and practical courses including project work and industrial training. A lecture of one hour per week per semester will be equivalent to one credit. Thus, a three-credit hour course will have three-hour lectures per week throughout the semester.

a. Duration of the Program: Four years comprising of 8 semesters (2 semesters/year)

b. Admission Requirements: Students seeking admission to pursue the course for the degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm.) (Honours) Should have passed the SSC and HSC (or ‘O’ level and ‘A’ level) examinations in science group or equivalent degrees with at least GPA 3.0 in a scale of 5.0 without any additional subjects. Candidate must have a minimum aggregate GPA 6.0 in SSC/ “O” level or equivalent and HSC/ “A” level or equivalent examinations in a total scale of 10.0. In all levels, the students must have to secure B grade (Credit point 3.00) in chemistry and biology separately and a minimum GPA 2.0 in mathematics.

International students must have passed 12 education years and got the same grade in equivalent examinations from foreign recognized institutions will be eligible get admission in any Private University as per rules and regulations of Ministry of Education and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.

The students must to pass HSC/ “A” level or recognized equivalents with the following science subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics to qualify for admission. Candidate must pass HSC/ “A” level or recognized examination in the current year or one previous year. However, candidates having no Mathematics at the HSC/ “A” level or recognized equivalents may be admitted, but they have to take an extra 3 (three) credits course on Remedial Mathematics other than the courses offered in the syllabus of the B. Pharm. Program.

c. Total minimum credit requirement to complete the program: The students are required to complete all the assigned credits (164) to attain the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree.

d. Total class weeks in a Year/Semester: The university confers the degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy after a student has satisfactorily completed all the required courses offered over a period of four academic years. The academic year is divided into two semesters each of which will be as follows:

Class Duration and Schedule: The duration of each class depends on the credit of the courses. One credit means one-hour class per week. Therefore, in a three-credit course, three hours of class per course will be held in a week. Class schedule is published at the beginning of the semester as per university rules.

Course Load per Semester: Students have to complete all the courses as offered within the eight semesters. However, if any student fails in one or more course(s) in any semester, he/she can retake it in the next semester along with other regular courses. The maximum course load in a semester is 24 (twenty-four) credits. For special cases, permission from the Registrar office will be required.

e. Minimum CGPA requirements for graduation: The students have to secure a minimum CGPA of 2.25 to get a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree.

f. Maximum academic years of completion: Generally, the stipulated time limit for completion of Bachelor of Pharmacy degree is four years. However, on compassionate grounds this time limit may be extended to a maximum of eight years.

g. Category of Courses:
